Port Elizabeth – Three men have been arrested after a 62-year-old man was gunned down in his home in Jeffreys Bay during a robbery in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said the man, who resided in Silver Tree Road, had apparently heard a noise downstairs at around 2.20 AM this morning, and had gone to investigate.

She said it is believed that the man, whose name has not yet been released, had become engaged in a scuffle with intruders who were breaking into his house. At least one of them is believed to have been carrying a firearm.
Swart said during the scuffle, shots had been fired and the homeowner had been fatally wounded.

Swart said the intruders had then fled the scene on foot. She said the Jeffreys Bay police had been immediately alerted to the incident.

"Alert community members reported suspicious persons in their yards, which was immediately followed up on and led to the arrest of one male suspect."

"Further investigations led the police to the homes of two other suspects in Ocean View. All three suspects were detained on charges ranging from murder to housebreaking and theft," she said.

Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok expressed his condolences to the family for their loss and thanked the community for working with the police to bring the alleged perpetrators to book.

Lebok also commended the team of police officials for the speedily arrests.
Swart said the three suspects were due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday, August 14, 2017.

#Moord: RIP Johan Marais . Wat n skok. Wanneer gaan die sinlose geweld ophou. Wanneer gaan die skelm gemors gestop word. Hier waar ek woon in Iowa los ons ons sleutels in ons motors. On los ons huise oop. As ek gaan kos koop los ons ons motors oop. Waar is ons land oppad heen. Jeffreysbaai was altyd n mooi en skoon dorp. Wat het geword van gereg. Eat het geword van wetsgehoorsaamheid. Dit is genoeg.  Dit moet hier stop. Dink aan julle Marais gesin. Hartseer dag.  Johan was altyd so vriendelik en het altyd gevra hoe gaan dit.
